Illaun Restoration Site: Continuous Cover Forestry Project

Illaun Restoration Site

Acres: 27
Location: Outside Miltown Malbay
County: Clare
Purchase Date: 2020 and 2023

Overview: The Illaun site, situated in the hills near Miltown Malbay in West Clare, began its transformation in 2020 when Hometree acquired an old plantation forest on a sixteen-acre farm. The site was characterized by two aging conifer blocks separated by a small ash plantation. Like many plantations of its kind, it suffered from a lack of management, with the over-matured spruce trees crowding the site and the ash plantation devastated by ash dieback disease. In 2023, Hometree expanded its stewardship by purchasing an adjacent 11 acre field for woodland creation, marking the beginning of a significant restoration project aimed at fostering a thriving, diverse ecosystem.

Current Condition: The Illaun site is undergoing a careful restoration process using the Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) method, which promotes gradual transformation into a native woodland. The dense spruce plantation has been selectively thinned and underplanted with native species such as holly and hazel, while birch, alder, and oak have been introduced in other parts of the site. The ash plantation, heavily impacted by disease and wet conditions, has mostly died off. However, in this apparent loss, new life is flourishing. Beneath the fallen ash trees, a fen peat habitat has emerged, teeming with a vibrant mix of wildflowers and naturally regenerating willow. Meadowsweet, flag iris, and giant hogweed thrive here, creating a lively tapestry of plant life that hums with insect activity during the summer months. In 2023, a wetland complex featuring six ponds of varying sizes was established, now buzzing with dragonflies, damselflies, and other wildlife.

Vision: The long-term vision for Illaun is to transform it into a nature reserve combining woodland and wetland habitats. As restoration progresses, this site will serve as an invaluable resource for local communities, providing a space for recreation and connection with nature. Illaun will become a showcase of CCF management on the west coast, demonstrating how thoughtful stewardship can restore and enhance ecological health. Once fully established, this biodiverse haven will support a rich tapestry of native flora and fauna, offering a peaceful sanctuary for both wildlife and people.
